The Cowboy Trail was built by Fremont, Elkhorn and Missouri Valley Railroad during the 1880s. Later on during 1992, this rail road was abandoned. Late on the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy purchased this rail road and they gifted the money they received from it to Nebraska. In the recent times Nebraska Games and Parks Commission looks after the trail and is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Cowboy Trail.

Along the Cowboy Trail, you will find around 29 communities and some major cities. Some of the important cities near the trail includes Gordon, Valentine, Chadron, O'Neil, Neligh, Norfolk, and Ainsworth. Among these cities you will find trail heads near Norfolk, Valentine as well as O'Neil.





On the Cowboy Trail , you will find around 221 bridges and all these bridges have been used for recreation. Among these there are two famous bridges which are visited by a large number of people. These bridges are over the Niobrara River and over the Long Pine Creek.

When you visit the Cowboy Trail you will find various kinds of landscapes. Some of them include the Sandhills, the valleys of the river Niobrara, the Pine Ridge, the Elkhorn River and the Long Pine Creek. Because of all these attractions tourists from various parts of the world to visit this place. Everyone visiting Nebraska make it a point to visit the Cowboy Trail.
