Boot Hill Cemetery was the only cemetery near Ogallala and was also the official burial ground of the region. This remained the only burial ground from the period of 1874 to 1884. The first burials in this cemetery were that of a mother and a child. This happened in the year 1867. Other than this, the common people were also buried here along with the rich and notable people. Other people who were buried here were the people who were killed during the Civil War. One important fact about the cemetery is that there were no horse burials in the burial ground.
In the Boot Hill Cemetery there were other women who were also buried. But the burial of Bernard Miller's first and second wife got much hype as it was said by some saints that the West was like a hell for women as well as horses.
Joseph Hayden was one of the important gamblers who won $100,000 when he was gambling with the cattle barons of Texas. After this he tried to escape that place but was killed by the gang of William Bland and was later on buried in Boot Hill Cemetery.
The famous Bill Campbell known for his mythical exploits also buried here after he died after he was accused of being a Yankee Bean Eater. Other than this Michael Kearney and Worley who also known as “Rattlesnake Ed” were also buried in Boot Hill Cemetery. When you visit the cemetery you will also find there are some unidentified bodies as well.
