The Pony Express National Historic Trail demonstrated that a transcontinental system was built and had been operated continuously for about a year. The service came by replacing the first transcontinental telegraph and railroad. In the year 2006, the United States Postal service trademarked the name "Pony Express".

The Pony Express National Historic Trail was founded by William H.Russell, William B.Waddell and Alexander Majors. The mail service officially came into operation on April 3, 1860. The first trip of this trail was to the, westbound, which was made in 9 days and 23 hrs. The eastbound trip was made in 11 days and 12 hrs. The Pony Trail was completely established before the beginning of the American civil war. The Pony Express stations were placed at the intervals of about 10 miles along the route. Each corner of the saddle had a pocket or a cantina where bundles of mails were placed.

The express trail use to follow the route of Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail and California Trail. After crossing the Missouri River at St Joseph in Kansas. Many rides were done on the trail the first rides were scheduled to leave San Franscisco and St Joseph on the same day which was scheduled on April 3, 1860. Instead of that the westbound route achieved more popularity and became more common. James Randall was credited to be the first rider from the Alta telegraph office at San Francisco.
