The recreation opportunities in Nebraska National Forest are wide and diverse. Snuggled into Ponderosa pines, Steer Creek Campground in the southern tip of the forest is a hot spot for the campers. The campground is equipped with a host of facilities like water pump, fire rings, vault toilet, table and chair for the convenience of the guests. The forest trails offer great hiking and biking options. The Sandhills is the perfect refuge for horseback riding. Those interested in horse camping should carry electric fence and corrals for confining the horses.
All types of recreation from hiking, horse riding to hunting to bird and animal watching are allowed in Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest. Shooting activities within the hundred fifty yards of the forest is prohibited. Game archery and hunting are limited to animals like mule deer, antelope and grouse. The hunters are required to take part in a voluntary wing count during the hunting season. Currently the forest has constructed many motor riding trails for the convenience of the tourists.
