The Pine Ridge trails running across the northwest part of Panhandle region covers many known trails and off-the-beaten tracks. Some of the important marked trails in the region are the Roberts Trailhead, the East Ash Trail, the West Ash Trail, the Coffee Mill Trailhead and the Spotted Head Trailhead. Marked by tree markers and sign posts in non-forested areas, the Pine Ridge trail allows hikers to tread onto unmarked trails as well. The best season to come is the spring and the fall. Hikers must ensure effective foot protection from the insects and ticks, owing to the wet weather.
One of the other not-so-popular but a fascinating areas for hiking in Nebraska is the Cowboy trail, an ongoing project under the 'Rail to Trail' project. Covering 321 miles from Norfolk to Chadron in northern Nebraska. Some of the terrains have still not been marked and the virgin beauty of the place will sure capture the hearts of all hikers.
The Indian Cave State Park trails have around eleven marked trails, stretches for around 20 miles. Located near Brownville, the region is often steep and provides a good challenge to the hikers. Thus hiking in Nebraska offers hikers a great range, depending on terrain, accessibility, length and experience of the hiker.
